The Astronomy Picture of the Day for today is about a meteorite that crashed through the roof of a Chicago home, and includes this useful factoid:

The average homeowner should expect to repair direct meteor damage every hundred million years.

So, my Mom lives in that town. She says there were meteorite hunters there for weeks with special detectors. Some guy got $10k for a chunk in his backyard. Not only do you not know 'what' will drop out of the sky, you don't know 'how much' it be worth.
