Math factoid of the day: 54

Thursday 16 June 2016This is more than eight years old. Be careful.

54 can be written as the sum of three squares in three different ways:

7² + 2² + 1² = 6² + 3² + 3² = 5² + 5² + 2² = 54

It is the smallest number with this property.

Also, a Rubik’s cube has 54 colored squares.

Since when is 0 not a square (and 1 is)? :-P

1^2 + 2^2 + 6^2 = 0^2 + 4^2 + 5^2 = 3^2 + 4^2 + 4^2 < 54
